Why Filtered water?
The water we drink contains 3 basic groups of impurities, these are organics, in-organics and metals. Very few of these are particularly good for us.
The main cause of taste, odour and colour in our water are organics and all filter types remove these. Boiling water for at least 10 minutes will kill bacteria, but it will not remove chemicals or purify water.
Chlorine is the most common organic and all carbon filters will remove it, but what of the other impurities you might be drinking.This debate has been raging for many years and there are two polarized points of view.
We do not aspire to either side, but provide the following information for you to make up your own mind. Fluoride is used to prevent tooth decay and is an inorganic. Banned in many countries, fluoride was once disposed of as toxic waste and Australia is now one of the most heavily fluoridated countries in the world. The Council also believe that children have a 45% greater risk of developing cavities without Fluoride.
Chlorine is used to kill germs, but because it contains Trihalomethanes (THM’S) - known carcinogens, it is closely linked to cancer. Moreover too much chlorine can affect the taste and smell of your water, filtering removes chlorine and invigorates your water. Aluminum Sulphate is added to help clarify water and to make it look better. However, NSW water authorities have stopped adding aluminum, due to research linking it with Alzheimers Disease.
Many people believe rainwater to be the purest drinking water but levels of 200 ppm of TDS have been measured in rainwater tanks. Many impurities find their way into rain water, from air-borne pollutants, impurities from your roof collection area and finally from the tank itself where sludgy residual build-up further contaminates water purity.
