The Carl Zeiss Sonnar® T* 135mm F1.8 ZA (SAL135F18Z) is an exceptionally bright telephoto lens, and its 135mm focal length brings your subject in close without compressing the perspective the way more powerful telephoto lenses do. It's a superb lens for portraits,indoor sports, and landscapes, with an F1.8 maximum aperture that makes it extremely effective in low-light conditions, and defocusing characteristics that fully live up to the high standard set by its cousin, the Planar® T* 85mm F1.4 ZA.
Composed of 11 elements in 8 groups, including two ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements to correct chromatic aberration, the Sonnar® T* 135mm F1.8 ZA is also excellent for close-up work, offering a maximum magnification ratio of 0.25x at a minimum shooting distance of 72cm/28.3". An internal focusing mechanism assures rapid autofocusing for quick-action shooting. Easy and comfortable to operate, the lens also features a wide focus ring with auto clutch, and a focus hold button for positive focus lock during AF operation. With the light-gathering power of its F1.8 aperture and support for the Super SteadyShot® image stabilization built into aseries camera bodies,the Sonnar® T*135mm F1.8 ZA lets you enjoy available-light shooting to the fullest.
Circular apertureIn general, if an aper ture uses 7 or 9 aperture blades, then the shape of the aperture becomes a 7-sided or 9-sided polygon as the aperture is made smaller. However, this has a certain undesirable effect in that the defocusing of point light sources appears polygonal and not circular. lenses overcome this problem through a unique design that keeps the aperture almost perfectly circular from its wide-open setting to when it is closed by 2 stops. Smoother, more natural defocusing can be obtained as a result.
Internal focusingOnly the middle groups of the optical system are moved to achieve focusing, which leaves the total length of the lens intact. Benefits include fast autofocusing and a short minimum focusing distance. Also, the filter thread at the front of the lens does not rotate, which is convenient if you’re using a polarizing filter.
ADI flash meteringAdvanced Distance Integration flash metering is available when the built-in flash, HVL-F56AM external flash, or HVL-F36AM external flash is used together with a lens that has a built-in distance encoder.* It provides automatic metering that is virtually unaffected by the reflectance of subjects or backgrounds. Precise distance information is obtained through the encoder, and this data is used to compensate the flash output accordingly. This yields good exposures more reliably than conventional TTL (through-the-lens) flash metering, which can be thrown off by overly reflective or overly dark subjects and backgrounds.
Focus hold buttonOnce you've adjusted focus to where you want it, pressing this button on the lens barrel will keep the lens locked to that focusing distance. The preview function can also be assigned to this button through the camera's customsettings.
